Menswear is a good niche for selling...

What I want to talk about today is “Menswear.” It seems that this selling niche is often overlooked by some but can be a very good selling product.

A few weeks ago my uncle was to play in a seniors golf tournament and he wanted one of those vintage golf caps, the kind with the fuzzy ball on the top. He had the knickers, socks and vest but could find no hat. He said he needed it to complete his golfing “ensemble.”

Well, I took it upon myself to try to find him one because he is not so good on the internet especially with shopping. It took me a while but I did find his hat. Now, he is a happy “vintage” golfer!

This experience brought to mind that menswear is not as big a seller in the clothing category a women’s or children.
But there are more and more men looking and shopping on the internet than before.

We all know the old story that men do not like to go shopping but now they can shop from the comfort of their computer chair.

Hawaiian shirts are a big seller and actually for what reason I don’t know. I do know that my brother has a closet full and wears every one!

My friend’s husband buys ties, especially the skinny ties as well as bow ties. Who would have thought that they would become popular again. I see more and more men wearing the bow ties and some are fabulous! There are some really good handmade bow ties and they are better made than factory made and he always buys from a handmade seller. He says the quality is much better and they “fit” perfect.

Now, I do not know about the fit because when growing up my brothers just wore the clip on ties and they fit no matter what. This man actually ties his bow ties and sometimes it is just a wonder to me how he can get the bow tie to look perfect, but he does. Maybe it is a ritual that he enjoys and there is a certain je ne sais quoi to his ties.

This brings me to the subject of don’t throw away that ugly tie of your significant other because some where there will be the person that just might be looking for it.

I have seen skirts made from old ties and even where a lady took a tie and made a bow tie from it. One crafter took old ties and used them in dog collars, they were so cute that I got one for my little dog!

If you are bargain hunting at your local thrift store you will find many suit jackets. My friend buys these at a very low cost and adds a bit of ribbons, lace and other “stuff” and turns it into a ladies jacket. They are beautiful. So if you have a sewing talent this is something that you can do to create a niche for this product. I wish I could do this but when I tried it looked like something a business zombie would wear!

Vintage menswear is becoming popular items to sell. Two toned shoes, pocket watches with fobs, bow ties, skinny ties, and lest I we not forget sweaters! My son is a sweater freak. He loves the sweaters with knitted designs and colors.

There is a world of men’s goods out there in thrift stores that just need a little cleaning and can be up cycled for a more tailored look.
Find an old leather jacket, try your hand a making it into a steampunk style which is another big selling product. Some people have taken to revamping old leather jackets into really great purses.

So, while on your hunt in thrifts stores or at local auctions don’t pass by the menswear because there is so much that can be created or sold just as is because there is an up and coming market for these items.
